Sponsor a hedgehog

You can help us continue our work by sponsoring animals or cages.

In return you will receive a certificate, our newsletter, a photograph of the hedgehog and hedgehog fact sheet.

We have a growing collection of permanent residents who cannot be released back to the wild including:

Harmony

Approx. 3-4 years old.

An elderly lady found wandering round a garden looking lost. She was discovered to have a massive abscess in her lower jaw which caused all her teeth along that side to collapse.

She was operated on and has made a full recovery but can't go back out in the wild due to her inability to eat anything but soft food.

She lives as normal life as is possible in one our outside pens, surrounded by plants and her very own log pile.

Jasper

Approx. 14 months old.

A strange one. Dropped off at our vet with pneumonia and a skin condition, he's a bit of an enigma.

He's not a normal wild hedgehog. His body is all the wrong shape and colour and we have our suspicions that he may have been imported or have been cross bred between an exotic hog and a wild hog.

Whatever the case, until we're sure what he is we can't release him as a cross-breed won't survive in the wild.

Wilbur

Approx. 6-7 months old.

This little boy came in when he was tiny and had tried to hibernate. He was stone cold. Having been woken up, all looked well but despite all our efforts, he has turned into a little puppy who wants human company and goes nuts if he sees another hedgehog.

All attempts at getting him to be scared of us have failed and the instant he hears us he wants to be out and playing with our feet. He will be spending the start of the Summer in an outdoor pen to see if we can get him to remember that he's supposed to be wild.

You can sponsor a hedgehog for as little as £2.50 per month

Other sponsorship

Treatment or intensive care patients

Cages

Cages are expensive to buy and maintain. We are fortunate to have had a number of ours donated by some extremely kind people.

Although it is sometimes possible to house more than one Hedgehog in a cage, it depends very much on how well they are, whether their weights are similar and obviously, how well they get on together. Some do, some really don't.

The more we have to house separately, the more cages we need. A donation of £75 allows us to purchase another cage. A smaller amount allows us to purchase items for that cage such as veterinary grade antibacterial cleaners, bed boxes and bedding.

Incubator and Neo-Natal Unit

An incubator is used for very sick animals. It allows us to provide them with a controlled atmosphere - constant temperature and humidity. For those with pneumonia, or after a major operation, these can be a life saver. Your sponsorship helps pay for electricity to run the unit as well as cleaning, servicing and feeding the resident.

You can sponsor an intensive care unit and patient for £5.00 per month

The Neo-Natal Unit is a larger non-portable unit. It allows us to treat mothers and newborns as well as orphaned litters as well as provide an environment for the occasional larger guest prior to transportation to a more permanent centre. Your sponsorship helps pay for electricity to run the unit as well as cleaning, servicing and feeding the residents.

External Pens

Although these aren't as exciting as the incubators, they are vital to our work. We often take in very young hogs, sometimes straight fom the nest. Others can be with us for many months.

Prior to release they have to get used to being wild again as well as start to dig for their own food. Our outside pens allow them to do this in safety whilst being monitored for any issues. They also house our long stay residents who can't be released.

A donation pays for planting (no they don't eat it, they stomp it) cleaning, renewal of fencing etc.

To keep fees as low as possible some patients/cages may be sponsored by more than one person
